What to expect
Your first appointment helps us understand your family law issues and the background to your situation. We’ll identify any further information needed and explain the likely range of outcomes you could pursue through negotiation or court.
Your first appointment
Call, email or request a first appointment. We’ll need details about you and the other party to check whether we can act before giving advice. We’ll then be in touch about next steps.
You’ll need to complete intake forms beforehand. These give background to your matter and help keep the appointment to about an hour.
At your appointment
Your lawyer will go through your circumstances with you and explain your options, what each involves and what is likely to happen next. That includes what needs attention first and what can wait. Bring the documents you have, even if you haven’t gathered everything yet. See our guide to what to bring to your first appointment.
Paying for your appointment
The first appointment is charged at your solicitor’s hourly rate. Reception can tell you the rate when you book. We provide a written costs agreement before work begins. See our fees and payment options.
After your appointment
If you want us to take the matter further, the next steps will depend on your circumstances.
Most family law matters are resolved without a court deciding the outcome. This may involve negotiation, mediation or conciliation. We advise on the steps needed to formalise any agreement. If your matter does need to go to court, we prepare the case and represent you throughout.
While we’re acting for you, we send monthly itemised invoices. You can ask at any time about outstanding fees or work that has not yet been billed.
