Family violence and legal support

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 000.

If safety is a concern, legal advice and practical support may both be needed. Different orders are available through Tasmania’s Magistrates Court and the federal family law system.

Family violence orders in Tasmania

Applications for state family violence orders are made in the Magistrates Court. PWB does not currently act in those applications.

Tasmania Legal Aid’s Safe at Home program can advise on family violence orders and may assist with an application or court representation. Call 1300 366 611.

Tasmania Police can also issue Police Family Violence Orders. For non-urgent police assistance, call 131 444.

Read the Magistrates Court’s information about family violence orders.

Where PWB can help

Protective orders for parents and children can be sought within proceedings in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. We can advise whether an application is appropriate for your circumstances and prepare it where needed.

For family law advice, contact PWB. Our guide to parenting arrangements after separation also explains how safety concerns can affect arrangements for children.
